Elegia tectorum has been split into 2 species, a robust form from the Western Cape which is now E. elephantine, and a smaller form from the Southern Cape which remains E. tectorum. A handsome and vigorous species with dark green stems clasp by chestnut brown sheaths. These terminate in dark brown almost black ornamental flowering bracts. And excellent species for windy seaside gardens as well as inland sites. Full sun with any free draining soil. Hardy to about -7/-8⁰C.
